Belgium has indeed some good electro and house music but you have to be very selective in the partys you go to, to hear that good electro/house music (in the bigger citys).

It isn’t until recently that electronic music suddenly became very popular among the bigger crowds.

I also remembered – I am 30 now, so I am fucking old lol.

Ok I’m a writer so hope this doesn’t get too verbose, I just wanted to explain why I was shocked at disco being the new thing– I remember from about 1999-2004 there was almost nothing but disco house saturating every dance floor, and if you didn’t like disco, you were dancing to breaks that night. House and breaks and DnB was pretty much it, and I love those things but thank the world for the underground parties that played something else because without them we would have been bored out of our minds.

Then I realized two things-

1) I am 30, and barely remember disco’s revival in house back then, so people in their early 20s most likely do not remember it at all. 2000 was ten freaking years ago. But it did happen here in the US. I remember it kind of peaking with Daft Punk’s “Discovery”. Whatever Daft Punk is classified as now, to me they were very disco. Very, disco… Disco, very… Discovery! So that was forever ago, but that’s why I was a bit shocked and reacted like a smart ass- I forgot it was forever ago. It seems like yesterday.

2) BELGIUM! Well I am actually familiar with a few electronic music acts from there, more than I realized once I looked on wiki, and I see that none of them are the fluffier stuff so loved (and overplayed) by America in the clubs during the time all this disco house and funky house was everywhere. You guys gave us Soulwax and I think that everything they touch turns to gold. But I am not familiar with what was happening in the Belgian music scene back in 2000-2004. Besides Soulwax/2 Many DJs I know of Front 242, Lords of Acid, and more recently, Vive la Fête and Dr lektroluv. All of which are a far cry from disco! Belgium’s music I am noticing is really kick ass! As in, it will kick my ass. I love it.

I try not to but sometimes I am a typical American. It’s only been because of getting into Soulwax and following who they’ve collaborated with, and being a fan of Tiga in the last four or five years, that I have heard of electronic music scenes that aren’t in France, America, Japan or England. While America was being house-heads and boogying to disco/funky house I was unaware that I was missing out on the harder stuff that we love here now in the US even though some of it has been around for awhile.

I think America is so in love with French artists (and they are great) that it forgets about Germany and Italy and Belgium. Even Eastern European nations have an impressive scene. They get more and better DJs there than what comes to Seattle or Vancouver where I live. It’s so homogenous here. I really don’t hear German stuff or Belgian stuff. Even in the more underground parties it’s not played much. And I can see how the badass music of Belgium might have opted out of the era of being drenched in disco in the early 2000s.

So I again apologize for saying a dumb American thing and I will be quiet now and just follow this blog like a good girl.
