OMGITM Supermix #26 by Shaved Monkeys
It was June last year, I was looking for some new tracks on the net and suddenly landed on the Shaved Monkeys myspace. I checked out the music player only to be surprised about one of their tracks, namely Feel That. I contacted them and these friendly apes gave me a copy and in return I posted some info about them. Now, 1 year later, I can’t believe how far they’ve gotten. One new member joined the crew, they got signed onto CRUX for their latest production called Get Rough and they got massive airplay on the hottest parties around. They’ve also started their own party concept namely Rave Alert.
Today they sent us their latest mixtape which they did for the Supermix series of OMGITM. Expect a lot of exclusive, unreleased bangers:

I was looking out for this track for quiet a bit now, I first heard it when he posted a small preview on youtube and was eager to find a full version. After contacting him he said it was being promo’d at WMC, so no luck for me. Today, after two weeks, he finally released the full 320 along with a brand new mixtape.

Laston & Geo

The first time when I really got to know these guys was in a Belgian television show called “Going Out”, it was a weekly program where music, clubs and lifestlye were the central topics. Another part of that show was called “The Blender”, the host Ben asked the viewers to send in two tracks of which they would like to hear a Mash-up, the guys responsible for creating this weekly mash-up were of course Laston & Geo! Watch a clip of it right here (in Dutch). Love Geo’s definition of a mash-up:
“You can have a sandwich with cheese, or you can have a sandwich with ham, but when you combine these two you get a Croque-Monsieur!”
Then there is the mixtape I probably played the most ever! It’s their August mixtape of 2007 packed with old school tracks and brilliant mash-ups. At least every summer at some festival we put this one on for that ultimate summer feeling. I found a mediafire link that is still working, this is a must hear!

So, ok, that was 3 years ago, but these guys are still playing everywhere and their sets are always surprisingly fresh as well as their mash-ups! Here is their latest mash-up and latest mixtape! (tracklisting in comment)

Hot! Drum Attack

Hervé drops a new single “Zombies” coming from the anticipated mix album, “Ghetto Bass 2″ which should be release somewhere this Spring! The single/EP/whatever will contain two originals “Zombies” and “Hot! Drum Attack” as well as two remixes for Zombie by the same man: “Franzy Scanner”. To get some promotion going Hervé shared the track Hot! Drum Attack for free. As expect from the track title it contains a lot of drums fitted in some nice build ups and drops. The general picture in the end is very funky! The single should have been released today but for as far I can tell I haven’t found it on the online music platforms.

Sandy Bitches

After their highly anticipated release of “Cameroon/Macaroon”, Dolby Anol returns with yet another new EP. Sandy Bitches EP will be released on Tigerbeat6. Simplicty is the keyword here. They’ve chosen to use just one synth and one drum kit for every track. Not the best recipe if you ask me, but I have to say they did a great job.
A funky remix comes from the hands of Genuine Guy. Release date is April 10th.
You can preview the whole EP here:

The Mind Of Many

Those who followed Zombie Nations facebook page the last few weeks will probably know where I’m going with this post. Zombie Nation released sample packages some time ago so people could get starting producing with those samples, Zombie Nation collected them and let people vote for the best productions and out came the following track: The Mind Of Many. It didn’t stop there! Now it was time for everyone to start remixing. Remixes came flying in and again people could start voting! Amazing project by this man and the out-come is amazing as well! Electronic banger with clearly a lot of influences (obviously). Here is the original as well as the six selected remixes!

Chill Sessions #4

Yours truly is looking at 3 weeks of holiday, starting tomorrow! I couldn’t help but thinking about the tunes I’ll be blastin’ through the speakers tomorrow… I decided to pick some of those tracks and post ‘em up here.
A-Trak did a great job mashing up Lil Wayne’s “Fireman” with a reggae tune by Richie Spice. The reggae beat coming from “Youths Dem Cold” (video) adds a nice summer vibe to the vocals.

Lil’ Wayne – Fireman So Cold (A-Trak Remix)
Another great reggae influenced track is “Dub Rock” by Alix Perez, who’s gave the genre a drum & bass treatment. If you like artists like Benny Page or Visionary, I’m pretty sure you’ll like this one too! Alix Perez is currently based in North London, but he’s originally from Belgium (Charleroi if I’m not mistaking).

For the next tune he worked together with Sabre, also living in London. This intelligent piece of music samples an old 70s jazz fusion record made by Billy Cobham (listen to “Heather” here). The bassline and keyboards fit perfectly with the vocals and drum & bass beat. I also included a hip hop classic by Souls Of Mischief, also sampling that very keyboard.

Souls Of Mischief – From ’93 Till Infinity
Another drum & bass track. The legendary D.Kay did a collaboration with Concept. Together they’ve created a very warm tune with old school horns and some great house vocals on top of it. Sound like an anthem to me.

D.Kay & Concept – For Love Or Money
Last but not least: The Glitch Mob. With their combination of broken hip hop beats and glitchy synths, they gained a lot of popularity lately. Their latest single is called “Drive It Like You Stole It”. The first time they really got my attention was when I heard their incredible remake of Nalepa’s “Monday”.

The Electro Wars
“The Electro Wars is a documentary about the current electronic music scene, on what some people refer to as “electro” and its participants. Made by filmmaker Stephen Alex Vasquez, it’s premiering this week at the Miami winter music conference. It will be featuring music from some of the top producers in the scene such as Toxic Avenger, A-Track, Laidback Luke, Spank Rock & Steve Aoki.”
By the looks of the trailer, the main focus of this documentary is on the American scene. Maybe a bit less interesting for us Europeans, but still a lot of interesting names that take place behind the mic. A lot of dj’s/producers stepped up-to electro after being bored from the Hip-Hop scene. I think in Europe we know a complete other evolution, coming from more underground scenes as well as just plain rock&roll.
Another aspect topic’d in the trailer are the “blogs”. Literally thousands of blogs by people who don’t even know what they are talking about (quote lil jon). Do we know what we are talking about?
A producing duo that was asked to make a track for this documentary was: Blende! They shared the track with us before it’s big premier upcoming week. A track that, I think, perfectly sets the mood for a documentary as this one. I’m a fan!
