From funky to experimental

August 11th, 2010 | Hyped by REDNIK

After all that mixtape violence it’s time for a load of tracks! Got a lot of nice blog submissions the last few days and here is a (still) rather small selection of it! First few tracks are a bit more funky and chill while the second batch is a lot more rougher and experimental!

Chromeo‘s new single “Don’t Turn The Lights On” is getting a lot of blog love. For good reasons of course, it’s a very nice track accompanied with this very cool video as well. What me interested the most is the remix by Aeroplane, good stuff as always from Vito:

Next a dreamy, very easy listening remix by Edwin Van Cleef for Housse De Racket – Champions.

And while we are sharing remix for french bands, here is the Mixhell remix for Jamaica – Short and Entertaining. Igor Cavalera made a guest apperience in the offcial videoclip so this remix didn’t came as a big suprise! If Jamaica plays their cards right they will be come huge, I already had the chance to listen to the full album which is coming later this month and it’s absolutely brilliant!

Let’s crank things up a bit and add some more bass to the game. Dolby Anol is coming with a new digital EP “Visa Mastercard”. For this EP they focussed on african rythems and ancient chants from the east, add a lot of hard claps and heavy basses and you get yourself the Dolby Anol trademark. Not the biggest fan of foreign-like chants though … and therefor this free “American Express” track they added I dig the most.

Malente is currently working hard on his own label “No Brainer Records” and in november he’ll release an EP “Tanzan Boys” on it with remixes from producers from all over the world (Them Jeans, Reset!, Rubix, …). This next one is a remix he did for Crystal Fighters. Very funk southern feel too it …

Crystal Fighters – In The Summer (Malente Remix)

Now it’s time for those more experimental tunes! The first one is a free track coming from Mako Records (Proxy’s label). Very experimental, futuristic touches for those creepy late dark nights… spooky.

Marseille – Speaking Phantom

Simian Mobile Disco made an Mix CD for the US based FIXED. From what I can tell FIXED is a party concept and SMD is one of their main residents. The mix cd resembles a mixture of deep disco, techno records but as they say theirself “without forgetting it’s still a party!”.

Simian Mobile Disco – Nerve Salad

Beat & Bang were so generous to give away a free track. It’s called “Listen to Moscow” and brings us beats and wobbles you could expect coming from a label like Mako Records in my opinion. Will be hearing from the a lot in the future I think.

And to end this post a short cool video from Zombie Nation playing with his new KORG Monotron toy. Cool to watch in case you haven’t seen it yet!

Laundry Day 2010

August 2nd, 2010 | Hyped by REDNIK

Laundry Day started as a very very small party in a street with only one stage if I’m not mistaking. Nowadays it’s a mass-event with more than 10 stages and 60.000+ visitors. You’ll find music there going from DnB, House, Techno, Electro to Hip-Hop and RnB. This year they have this cool japanese theme and the promoclip with it is absolutely brilliant, check it out on top.

Laundry Day also gives young talents the chance to prove themself. One of these young talents is e-Minded who did a special mixtape for the occasion including tracks and remixes from artists of the Laundry Line-up! You can find the tracklisting on the soundcloud link.

Wanderland

August 1st, 2010 | Hyped by REDNIK

I’m probably not the biggest fan or follower of Hermanos Inglesos but this Wanderland track sets them next to other Belgian genre like producers as Aeroplane and Villa in my opinion. Their debut album is coming early this Autumn and Wanderland is the first single of it. Dreamy vocals with a minimal house sound but still very danceable! Check out the video for the original on top and below you’ll find a remix by Superlijm making it even more danceable by adding some more dance / new disco vibes.

REDNIK’s festival guide: Les Ardentes 2010 (pt. 2)

June 30th, 2010 | Hyped by REDNIK

My favourite festival is getting closer and I received some great news about it! I’m allowed press access, so I’m hoping to do some nice exclusive backstage work! The last artists I mentioned were from the first two days, this next batch is mainly from the third day.

Sub Focus, Andy C

For as far as my knowledge about DnB goes these two are one of the bigger names in the scene. After all the electro, hiphop and alternative rock violence some straight to the point DnB is always appreciated. The two indoor halls are perfect for this and last edition also proofs DnB brings up probably the best audience atmosphere.

SebastiAn

Probably the most bizar figure of the already extravagant ed banger bunch. Even though he isn’t very strong in the technical dj’ing stuff, probably most of the time because he is under influence (check out this appearance in this Ed Banger Seven video), but as a producer he’s an absolute genious and he will certainly bring the best electro bangers of the moment.

Hudson Mohawke

I haven’t heard much stuff from this guy before I looked him up when he appeared in the Les Ardentes lineup, but after some classic youtube research I really started digging his productions. It’s hard to describe his “genre” it feels like a mixture of hip-hop background tunes, electronic stuff and dubstep? I’m looking forward to his performance and I bet it will the most unique and refreshing one.

Health

Health is not your average alternative rock band. This L.A. based band brings very experimental stuff with the use of your typicall drum, guitar stuff and some amazing synths and electronic stuff. When looking at the video you immediately think “what a bunch of weirdos, especially the one in the front!”, but still the stuff they bring is very addictive? in some way. Curious who this will be live and what reactions we’ll see from the crowd.

Don Rimini

Was called one of the best djsets at Les Transardentes (the smaller one night version of Les Ardentes). His newest EP is coming 5 July, so I’m hoping for lots of new stuff. Not much more to add, he probably won’t disappoint!

Les Petits Pilous

Even though I’m not a huge fan of their latest EP these two guys still bring back some good old memories. In a small venue not far from where I live there was a party … with Les Petits Pilous. The “electronic scene” isn’t so big over here, so of course the turn up wasn’t that big. Still these guys went full on and the accompanying Born To Film crew even tried to Crowd surf (I think there were two rows of people in front of the stage …)

Sound of Stereo

These guys were absolutly everywere last year and are still killing it in 2010, even though I must say I’m not the biggest fan of their latest remix for Proxy. Even though I have already heard them plenty of times I’ll still swoop by even if it’s only for their “big-room banger” Metric, which will sound brilliantly in the big indoor halls.

Janelle Monae

A name from day two, but a nice fresh artist to describe at the end of this Les Ardentes guide. Janelle Monae isn’t a name that would normally pass the frontpage on this blog, but from what I’ve seen from youtube videos she brings an amazing live performance. She brings a mixture of soulfull hiphop and jazz.

REDNIK’s festival guide: Les Ardentes 2010 (pt. 1)

June 22nd, 2010 | Hyped by REDNIK

Next up in the festival guide, the first part for Les Ardentes 2010. It has a more alternative dance/rock/hiphop setting going on so there are bands enough to talk about for this one! It’s the third year I’m going and the previous two edition were absolutely brilliant. Four days of rock, alternative, pop, hiphop, electro, dubstep, techno, dnb, … on one main stage outside and two indoor halls (which you very much appreciate at bad weather!). I’m trying to get press access for this festival, so there might follow a review with some hot content afterwards! but for now here are the bands that are on my must see list and should be, yet again, on yours!

Pavement

This band is completely new to me but that’s probably because they were out for 10 years and got back for a full on reunion. Pavement is a Rock/Pop/Indie band and is actually very easy listening, it’s not easy to compare them with an other more known band, but you should check out some of the youtube videos and their best-of compilation album “Quarantine The Past”.

Cypress Hill, Missy Elliott, Drake

I told you Les Ardentes also featured some hip-hop names and these aren’t some small names. Missy Elliott will be playing for the very first time in Belgium and I’m sure not going to miss out on it. I’m absolutely clueless if she had any new numbers lately but tracks as “Pass that dutch” and “Get your freak on” will surely pas the revue. Other old school legends are Cypress Hill, their latest album “Rise Up” doesn’t bring much new under the sun but yet again we’re going for the absolute classics as “Insane in the membrane”. Drake is a young and fresh hip-hop artist who is currently finishing his debut album on the record label runned by Lil Wayne who normally was performing at Les Ardentes last year but cancelled his gig, I’m hoping Drake doesn’t do the same.

Crystal Castles

By the looks of several youtube videos that showed parts of their gigs true out the last years this is probably one of the most energetic performances there is. Crystal Castles is an electronic duo formed by producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Their debut album was very rough, trashy and oh so damn brilliant. Alice Practice a track from that debut album was used as a soundtrack in one of my favourite UK shows Skins, I was suprised by its effect, literally goosebumps! Their second album Crystal Castles II wasn’t release that long ago. It stepped down from the rough and trashyness and made it a bit more accessible for a larger crowd. I hope Alice won’t be holding back!

N.E.R.D.

wonder “kid” Pharell Williams formed with band member Chad Hugo a productionduo that was responsible for the production of artists as P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears and many more. In 2001 they teamed up with Shay Haley and started the group N.E.R.D. A mixture of Hip-hop, Funk, Rock and Pop makes this a must see. Their last album Seeing Sounds is so damn fresh and has very catchy tracks as “Everyone Nose”. And as you can see in the video, they sure know how to get a crowd hyped!

Planet Turbo feat. Tiga, Proxy, Thomas Von Party, Zombie Nation, Riton and Matt Walsh

This will probably be the best “electro” experience of the whole four days. Tiga and his buddy’s will be taking over one of the two indoor halls for a complete evening. Proxy and Zombie Nation will be bringing us live stuff of course, I just hope Proxy updates his setlist! and Zombie Nation … well he can play whatever he wants, his gig at Pukkelpop last summer was brilliant. Turbo recordings on myspace.

Midnight Juggernauts

Along with a good friend of mine we expected their debut album too be huuuuge. and it was huge! But unfortunately not with the bigger crowds (in Belgium at least). I bet some of the tracks from that album like “Road To Recovery” and “Into The Galaxy” sound familiar even tough they aren’t fimiliar with the band itself (check those out on youtube). The Midnight Juggernauts recently released their second album “Crystal Axis”, a somewhat “darker” set of tracks. The first single Vital Signs has past the front page a time or two. These guys are most definitely on the top of my to see list.

VILLA

For our Belgium readers the names Fredo & Thang will probably ring a bell. These two did a lot of dj work some time ago, but then suddenly somewhat dissapeared (or I just lost track …). Well, for those who are still clueless about the name VILLA, it’s Fredo & Thang + Seba. Their djsets differs a lot from those by Fredo & Thang back then. Down tempo warm house like tracks, hard to describe, but best placed in line with productions from Aeroplane.

Next up Les Ardentes part two!
