Tropical Tunes

I’m back from Rock Werchter and survived the tropical heat with temperatures going between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. I got 3 days to recuperate before I’m off to Les Ardentes with again temperatures around the 30 degrees. When checking the inbox I saw over 130 mails, so a lot of work to do before I’m off again. This batch comes directly from the inbox, very good stuff.

A remix by Shooting Horses for Dj Mujava who we all know from Township Funk, it was a very “warm” house track and this next one does exactly the same. The original track is called Mugwanti and features some tropical South-African lyrics. I haven’t heard the original yet but this remix certainly has some nice bass going.

New track from Heavyfeet fitting perfectly inline with the previous one. It features some jazzy vocal work by Jon Rice with some nice funky drums in the background. Picturing myself listening to this one at some nice beach with palmtrees behind me, you catch my drift?

Realy digging this next track. This Is Head is a pop like band and their latest track 0011 got remixed by Kasper Bjørke giving it a brilliant electric touch. The mail describes it as “minimal disco that relaxes you and keeps you going at the same time”

We Speak No Americano seems to becoming one of the bigger summer hits this year. I heard it plenty enough at Rock Werchter last weekend. Chew Fu who seems to be sh*tting remixes and “refixes” came of course with his own edit for this one and because it was a long time ago since we posted something of Chew Fu and I’m kinda liking this edit:

And now for some more dubstep/dub like tracks: this first one is from Fog. It’s a remix for the track Stem from DJ Shadow. It got short-listed for the upcoming official remix compilation of DJ Shadow but it didn’t make the final cut. Of course we can benefit now and share it as a free download!

And to end this post a free track by The Glitch Mob and a fresh remix by Funtcase for the apparently upcoming pop sensation Ali Love.

Chill Sessions #4

Yours truly is looking at 3 weeks of holiday, starting tomorrow! I couldn’t help but thinking about the tunes I’ll be blastin’ through the speakers tomorrow… I decided to pick some of those tracks and post ‘em up here.

A-Trak did a great job mashing up Lil Wayne’s “Fireman” with a reggae tune by Richie Spice. The reggae beat coming from “Youths Dem Cold” (video) adds a nice summer vibe to the vocals.

Another great reggae influenced track is “Dub Rock” by Alix Perez, who’s gave the genre a drum & bass treatment. If you like artists like Benny Page or Visionary, I’m pretty sure you’ll like this one too! Alix Perez is currently based in North London, but he’s originally from Belgium (Charleroi if I’m not mistaking).

Alix Perez – Dub Rock

For the next tune he worked together with Sabre, also living in London. This intelligent piece of music samples an old 70s jazz fusion record made by Billy Cobham (listen to “Heather” here). The bassline and keyboards fit perfectly with the vocals and drum & bass beat. I also included a hip hop classic by Souls Of Mischief, also sampling that very keyboard.

Souls Of Mischief – From ’93 Till Infinity

Another drum & bass track. The legendary D.Kay did a collaboration with Concept. Together they’ve created a very warm tune with old school horns and some great house vocals on top of it. Sound like an anthem to me.

D.Kay & Concept – For Love Or Money

Last but not least: The Glitch Mob. With their combination of broken hip hop beats and glitchy synths, they gained a lot of popularity lately. Their latest single is called “Drive It Like You Stole It”. The first time they really got my attention was when I heard their incredible remake of Nalepa’s “Monday”.
